A worked example
$60,000 a year, single, paid every two weeks. Each paycheck is $2,307.69. For federal income tax, the employer multiplies it by 26 ($59,999.94), subtracts the $8,600 standard adjustment ($51,399.94), and applies the IRS table: $1,240.00 plus 12% of the amount over $19,900, or $5,019.99 a year. Divided by 26, that is $193.08. Social Security is $143.08 and Medicare $33.46. New York State income tax is $102.90: the paycheck less the $284.60 deduction allowance, through the biweekly table. Paid Family Leave and disability insurance take $11.17, leaving $1,824.00. A New York City resident also pays $77.99 of city tax, leaving $1,746.01.
Married filing jointly on $100,000 with two children under 17, paid every two weeks, takes home $3,222.48 a paycheck, with $124.61 of federal income tax.
What New York takes from a paycheck
New York's 2026 withholding tables start at 3.9% of net wages and climb with pay; the city's run from 2.05% to 4.25%. On $60,000 paid every two weeks, the state takes $102.90 a paycheck and the city another $77.99 for residents. Paid Family Leave stops once it reaches $411.91 for the year, and the disability deduction never passes $0.60 a week.
Federal income tax, Social Security (6.2%), Medicare (1.45%), New York State income tax, Paid Family Leave (0.432%) and up to $0.60 a week for disability insurance, plus New York City income tax if you live in the city. On a $60,000 salary paid every two weeks, single, that leaves $1,824.00 a paycheck outside the city, or $1,746.01 for a New York City resident.
How is New York income tax withholding worked out?
With the state's exact calculation method in publication NYS-50-T-NYS. Your employer subtracts a deduction allowance and an amount for each IT-2104 allowance from the paycheck, then applies the table for your pay period and marital status. Very high pay uses a flat top rate on the whole annualized amount instead.
Do I pay New York City income tax?
Only if you live in one of the five boroughs. Commuters who live outside the city do not pay it. City withholding uses its own tables (NYS-50-T-NYC); tick "I live in New York City" in the calculator to include it.
How much is New York Paid Family Leave in 2026?
0.432% of your gross wages each paycheck, up to $411.91 for the year. It pays for job-protected paid leave to bond with a new child or care for a family member.
What is the New York SDI deduction?
Disability benefits insurance. Your employer can take 0.5% of your wages for it, but never more than $0.60 a week, and many employers pay it all themselves. Tick "My employer pays all of it" if your pay stub shows no disability deduction.
How many allowances should I claim on my IT-2104?
That depends on your household; the IT-2104 worksheet walks you through it. This calculator uses 0 allowances unless you enter your own under New York withholding.
How is federal income tax withholding worked out?
Your employer annualizes each paycheck, subtracts a standard adjustment ($8,600, or $12,900 if married filing jointly, unless you checked the Step 2 box), applies the IRS withholding table, then divides by your number of paychecks and subtracts any dependent credits. This calculator follows the same IRS worksheet.
When does Social Security stop being taken out?
Once your pay for the year reaches $184,500, the 2026 wage base. Medicare has no cap, and an extra 0.9% applies to pay over $200,000.
Do 401(k) contributions lower my taxes?
A traditional 401(k) contribution lowers your federal income tax withholding, but Social Security and Medicare are still taken from it. Pre-tax health premiums through a cafeteria plan lower all three.
What about no tax on overtime or tips?
The overtime and tips deductions are claimed on your tax return, but you can ask your employer to withhold less now by adding the deduction you expect to Step 4(b) of a new W-4. Enter it under W-4 details to see the effect.
